Last Thursday we went to Lamotte-Beuvron to do practical work on sheep. After donning coats and boots, we weighed lambs (which were rather heavy (25-30 kg), it must be said!).
Then, after a very hearty meal, we divided the class into two groups.
Paul, the shepherd, was first heard at 1 group to handle the roll cage that can do a lot of manipulation on the sheep (trimming, various treatments ...) and ask the sheep sponges. This is a technique for synchronization of oestrus allowing farmers (except those working in farming) to combine the heat so the insemination and hence a lot of lambing ewes.
At the same time, Cynthia, the shepherdess, we first explained the signs of impending birth and then shows us how to perform first aid to the lambs (remove any envelopes obstructing the airways of the lamb, disinfection of the cord, weighed) and staples.
We also had the chance to attend a live lambing!
