low back A common symptom, back pain (LBP or) is a major public health problem in industrialized countries, and their cost is increasing. 70% of people in their lifetime at least one episode of low back pain, which may be partly related to work. In a few cases, back pain becomes almost constant and may lead to an incapacity. Actors prevention face a dual challenge: to improve work situations to prevent back pain and allow chronic low back pain to continue working.
Documentation INRS Know LBP low back pain Commons, discussed this issue are pain in the lower back more or less recurrent, little is known about the origin. In everyday language we speak as the case of "back pain", to "back strain" of lumbago, sciatica ... It is a very common and often in part related to the occupation, so that Each year, 100,000 low back pain are reported as accidents and more than 2000 as occupational diseases.
back
Anatomy The spine, also called the spine, consists of a stack of 33 vertebrae separated by discs that act as shock absorbers and flexible joints. Muscles and ligaments hold the column erected. The natural curvature of the back are also factors of stability.
Pathology
Low back pain is a symptom defined by pain sitting in the lumbar vertebrae. In about 95% of cases the origin is misidentified (LBP) and there may be no identifiable anomaly or on radiographs or to laboratory tests. In 5% of cases the cause is a condition defined: tumor, fracture, inflammatory arthritis, infection ...
Acute low back pain
In the case of the best known back pain Acute called "lumbago", pain occurs abruptly during an effort ("wrong move") with a blocking muscle reflex.
Acute back pain is characterized by low back pain, very intense, which can sometimes occur without any specific precipitating factor. This pain is relieved effectively by analgesics. Acute LBP is a benign: 90 to 95% heal within a few days and more than 90% of patients on sick leave due to lumbago resumed work in the month. However, the tendency to relapse in the year for around one third of patients.
Chronic back pain Chronic back pain
is defined by persistent back pain beyond 3 months. It is rare: only 5% of those affected continue to suffer three months after the onset of acute LBP. It is the severe form of LBP, because of its impact in social, occupational and economic. A
LBP may be due to a herniated disc
A herniated disc is a lesion of the intervertebral disc that is herniated. It can compress a nerve root and trigger pain in the territory innervated: the path of the femoral nerve (front of thigh), one speaks of the path cruralgia sciatic nerve (back of leg, buttock to foot), it is called sciatica.
Risk Factors
low back pain usually have a multifactorial origin. Occupational factors are of major importance, but you can also add personal predispositions, the risks at home and leisure activities, psychosocial factors and organizational ... Most often, the only element is the accidental occurrence unexpected pain, reflecting a lesion that can be attributed to the cumulative effect of repeated exposures: manual handling of heavy loads, awkward postures (Trunk flexion associated with its rotation), the whole-body vibration, hard physical labor. However, in the quarter back pain known as accident, an unforeseen element disrupts the work activity and causes a fall, slide, a false move or effort. These circumstances lead to a "stress" which causes excessive mechanical LBP.

Risks of physical activity
Each workstation involves an element of physical activity. This activity is often desirable because immobility is a risk factor for joint diseases, muscular and cardiovascular. However, for certain professions, such activity is excessive, unbalanced, and can directly cause damage to the musculoskeletal system (spine, limbs). A prolonged stance is hardly bearable for low back pain although it is only rarely implicated in the origin of low back pain. Manual handling, particularly the heavy lifting, is known as a risk factor for LBP. If these efforts are in poor conditions, the risk is still more important. Hard physical labor is defined as one that causes increased heart rate 30 beats per minute (compared to the rest).
If it is not possible to completely eliminate manual handling, consider the use of mechanical handling systems or motorized. Mechanical aids can significantly reduce the risk of low back pain by limiting the physical effort that must deploy workers to move heavy objects. But they must still receive proper training on the use of equipment (see our dossier
CACES ) and integrating them into their working method. If mechanical aids can not completely eliminate the handling work done directly by the worker, reduce the intensity of manual labor. There are several ways to achieve this:
Reduce weight of objects up to an acceptable limit. Reduce the total weight of an object by asking several people to lift, or by distributing the load between two or more than two containers. The use of light plastic containers reduces the weight of the load. Change the layout of the workplace: when moving an object, that reducing travel distance, horizontally or vertically, can limit the intensity of effort.
